Care and Feeding of your Slow Pitch Jigging Rod

Posted by Dan Harley on 30th Apr 2021

Slow Pitch Jigging rods by their design are thin, light weight "High Performance" pieces of fishing equipment.  We should all take note that High Performance doesn't mean unbreakable.  While not saying these types of rods are prone to breakage, we do need to be mindful of a few things to ensure we get a long and happy life out of our investment in SPJ rods.

  1. When dropping your jig, especially important with heavier jigs, you need to "follow" the drop with your rod and body, meaning you don't just drop the jig with the rod perpendicular to the water.  Instead you "follow" the natural dropping force with the rod your arm shoulder and body, in that order
  2. Most Slow Pitch Rods are constructed of Carbon Fiber Matt.  Carbon Fiber is has an extremely high strength to weight ratio that's why it's used however the material especially near the tip section can be brittle and needs extra protection.
    1. Rods should always be stored in the case that came with the rod, Store rods vertically do not hang them horizontally
  3. Thoroughly wash the rod entirely including the guides with a very mild soapy water solution.  Ensure rod is dry before returning it to the carry case or rod sock.
